There are so many great trends that I'm looking forward to using on my designs but the one that interests me the most is the wall of tile in a kitchen. Thats right we are talking about the latest concept in backsplash design. Going up, tiling everything and framing in windows.
I have been saying for years that an easy pathway to high design is through the use of tile. I love tile and use it in almost every design to create one of a kind looks personalized for each of my clients.
This years trend is to ditch the concept that back splash in a kitchen is installed only under the cabinets. Instead we are taking tile above the cabinets and going bold by covering entire walls.
You heard it correctly, backsplash has now gone wall to wall and almost any tile will work for this application. However if you want to keep your design evergreen my suggestion is going with a white subway tile.
I love subway tile for its versatility, cost and high design look. It comes in multiple sizes which makes it easy to create different looks and it can be found just about everywhere from tile shops to home improvement centers.
When looking for traditional subway look no further than the classic 3x6. This tile installed on a 1/2 set pattern is about as evergreen as you can get. If you want to punch it up a bit try using a darker grout to make the lines pop. You can also play around with other sizes such as 2x4 or 4x8.
Then there's my favorite the 3x12 white subway. This size moves us away from traditional and into a more modern look. It is also a great size to use if you are looking to set it on a herringbone pattern but it's just as beautiful installed on a 1/2 or 1/3 pattern.
Bottom line if your looking for that wow factor in your kitchen it's time to go big and bold, wall to wall and make tile your focal point! Weather it's evergreen subway tile, mosaic, or stone tiling entire walls in any kitchen can transform a basic design into high design with out remodeling your entire kitchen.
